Tolu balsam smells sweet and resinous: vanilla and amber, with a woody background, a peppery spark and a barely perceptible floral accent. It reads like a note from classic perfumery because it is one, and it has long served as a base for oriental compositions. The raw material is the resin of the Myroxylon balsamum tree.

This is a heavy note that stays in the air for a long time, so a few drops are enough where a lighter oil has to be dosed more generously. It rounds off blends that lack depth.

Orange, mandarin and bergamot brighten its sweetness. Vanilla, benzoin and patchouli strengthen the oriental character, while cedar and sandalwood add a dry, woody counterpoint.

Intended use

Scenting interiors: nebulizer, diffuser, aromatherapy burner, humidifier, sauna stones, fragrance devices and car air fresheners. Once diluted in a carrier oil, it is also suitable for skin care.

How to use

The scent comes through most fully in a nebulizer, where the oil is used undiluted. The oil is thick, so add it slowly to a diffuser or humidifier: 3-5 drops per 100 ml of water. In an aromatherapy burner, mix a few drops with water or carrier oil and heat. In a sauna, add 2-3 drops to the water poured over the stones. On skin, use only after diluting to 1-2%, which is 2-3 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.

Precautions

Tolu balsam contains a relatively high amount of fragrance allergens, so a patch test on a small area of skin before first use is especially advisable: wait 24 hours. Do not apply undiluted to the skin: it irritates skin and eyes and may cause an allergic reaction. Avoid contact with eyes; if it occurs, rinse with plenty of water. Do not ingest; if swallowed, do not induce vomiting and contact a doctor. Keep out of the reach of children. Use caution during pregnancy, while breastfeeding and with children. Store in a tightly closed bottle, away from light. Do not pour down the drain: the oil is harmful to aquatic organisms.
